Countdown #9

Countdown #9

$3.50
VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
script by Adam Beechen; art by Al Barrionuevo & Art Thibert Covers by Stephane Roux
With the recent devastation behind them, the new Challengers return to our universe to face their next challenge. Also this month: a returning hero, a surprising future for Pied Piper, and Karate Kid fulfills his destiny.
BONUS REVIEW by GARY OWENS

The problem with Countdown, thus far, is its ways of jumping around to various characters. Seeing some of the characters highlighted, getting to know them better, was interesting; watching Karate Kid withstand the disease, seeing Harley and Holly get together, and the chase sequences, with the Piper and Prankster, brought a needed comedic touch to the comic. But for months, it left open the question on how all of these relate. With this issue, the dawn begins to break, and all of them (who are alive) are around the same, physical area, at least. We find out why we should care about Piper. Holly and Harley have joined with the gang who found Ray Palmer. And, most important, we get the sense that we are finally in the fourth quarter of this storyline. Tom Derenick does a fine job with the art, and because the characters are all grouped together, the story flows better then in previous issues. It appears Paul Dini, the lead writer, now is hitting his grove, when he’s allowed to begin to rush towards the ending, and the "truth". Let’s see if the final eight issues stay at this higher level.
I GIVE THIS ONE 6 OUT OF 10 GRAHAMS.
