\"\"\u00a0ACTION COMICS #1 FACSIMILE EDITION\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0DC COMICS<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The title that started it all! Cover dated for June of 1938, Action Comics was going to be the newest and brightest in a line of anthology comics put out by National Allied Publications. But first, Editor Vince A. Sullivan needed a main character. Enter Writer Jerry Siegel and Artist Joe Shuster who created a one page origin story for what would become DC’s Big Blue Boy Scout and one of the best selling characters in the DC lineup. This is a much different Superman than the one we currently know. With an iconic cover pose highlighting a shield like “S” insignia, I’m going to guess that Joe Shuster quickly realised that drawing that over and over again would be kind of a pain. So it switched to a simple triangle insignia on the internal pages. This Superman was super strong but not super lift a planet strong. He didn’t fly, he leapt. And while he was the good guy, he wasn’t afraid to rough up the bad guys. Clark actively tried to date Lois. But this is how the legend began. And while we are celebrating Superman Day, it should be noted that Action was an anthology comic. And Superman only covered 13 pages. The rest of the 64 pages were filled by other characters who appealed to the youth of the time. Cowboys like ‘Chuck’ Dawson and Tex Thomson, Reporter Scoop Scanlon, Boxer ‘Pep’ Morgan, And magician Zatara as he battled the Golden Age’s first version of the Tigress. Fun pages filled with historucal tales of Marco Polo and Ripley Believe It or Not type pages featuring celebrities of the day. This is how comics began. 10 out of 10 Grahams.<\/p>\n

\"\" ACTION COMICS #252 FACSIMILE EDITION\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0DC COMICS<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

By now, 21 years later, Superman was owning Action Comics. And his universe was expanding. Now at a modest 32 page count for a dime, creative teams were coming up with all sort of diverse concepts to keep Superman fresh. Lois Lane, Perry White and Jimmy Olsen had been established as Superman’s secondary crew. But in a mere 8 pages, Writer Otto Binder and Artist Al Plastino stunned readers by introducing us to Superman’s cousin Kara. Not amaginary story! Not an evil robot duplicate! An actual flesh and blood relative that was canon. And Binder jam-packed the storywith details. We were treated to not only her origin story but the backround on the city of Kandor and a secret identity to boot. And since Action was still an anthology comic, even with the reduced page count, we get a second Superman story introducing us to the villainous Metallo and a Congo Bill\/Congorilla story. Simpler times but amazingly creative! 10 out of 10 Grahams.<\/p>\n

What better way to be one step away from a 200th issue than to go deep on one of the most complex and jaw-dropping real-life comic battles in history. That being the legal battle between DC and Fawcett, Captain Marvel vs Superman. C.C. Beck vs Julius “Bean Soup” Schwartz!\u00a0 A fight for the generations where no one really won except the lawyers who were getting paid. I really can’t even get into it as this is a never-ending rabbit hole. If you are already familiar with the situation, you know what I mean. If not, I can only really recommend slowly entering into the situation. I mean, entire books have been written about the subject. The writers here provide interesting facts and interviews to help try to illuminate the situation. But honestly, no matter how much you dig into it, there is always more. An excellent subject for this magazine to delve into. 10 out of 10 Grahams.<\/p>\n

\"\"CRITTERVERSE PRESENTS #3\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0ANTARCTIC PRESS<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The secondary characters from the Critter comic are featured center stage as creator Tom Hutchison and the talented crew of Writer Eric Esquivel, Artist Rene Micheletti, Colorist Rob Hawkins, and Letterer Kel Nuttall bring us the next chapter of Electric Youth. Yep, Paradox is still a mysterious jerk and this time he’s sending Electric Youth into what he thinks is a parallel universe but it’s really only 12 years into his future. And from his stand point, things are seriously messed up. Only after a one on one chat with his future self is he ready to start making some real decisions. A nice little tale of how things change, along with a few new mysteries to start speculation on. 9 out of 10 Grahams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
