The creative team of James III, Carlo Lauro, and Giulia Lafranceschina have done an excellent job of recreating an episode of the original cartoon on the printed page. And introduce us to the Townsville Fun World Amusement Park. One problem … the Mayor has christened today, Villains Day! And all the villains have come out for a day of fun and sun! Unfortunately, the girls are having a hard time not beating them up. With plenty of clues, red herrings, and a surprize ending, this one has more villains than you can shake a stick at! Definitely worth checking out and perfect for younger readers. 9 out of 10 Grahams.<\/p>\n

It also basicily tells the plot of the whole movie in it’s pages. Plus we get a homage to the classic Hostess Snack ads of the 1960’s and 70’s featuring Bluntman and Chronic. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Welcome to Comic History 101. I’m your instructor, Doc Schaefer and in today’s class, we’ll be looking at two unique bits of the world of comics …<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/em>SUPERMAN THE KRYPTONITE SPECTRUM #1\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0DC COMICS<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While not officially Kryptonite, it’s predecessor would have originally appeared in an unpublished 1940 story by Jerry Seigel. Originally called “K-metal” which removed Superman’s powers and gave humans super powers. The story was rejected as it contained a scene where Clark Kent reveals his secret identity to Lois Lane. But this was only a speed bump as the official first appearance of real Kryptonite would be in a June 1943 radio program, The Adventures of Superman featuring radio actor Bud Collyer. Kryptonite wouldn’t officially hit the pages of comics until 1949 in Superman Comics #61. However, in it’s first appearance it was colored red. Traditional Green Kryptonite finally showed up in 1951’s Action Comics #161. And while there are like two dozen different variations (NO JOKE! and that includes the mind blowing Pink variety!) there are six that are officially recognized the world over. Green, Red, Gold, White, Blue, and Jewel.\u00a0 And while W. Maxwell Prince’s story is an interesting one as Superman and Batman test Purple Kryptonite. And it’s effects are unique and rather devistating indeed. Plus it allows artist Martin Morazzo to redraw the same panels over and over again. But my issue is some of the bits of dialog scattered throughout the issue. “Red makes me angry”? As any Superman scholar knows Red Kryptonite creates unpredictable effects like causing Superman to develop a giant ant head or become amnesiac. It doesn’t make him just angry. And Black Kryptonite doesn’t split his brain in two, it brings about a full Jekyll and Hyde by splitting Superman into good and evil twins. Get the facts straight people! And Lois is 40 and wants a baby? I have some issues with that bit of dialog as well. However, Luthor losing it when he realizes that Superman is testing Kryptonite of himself is priceless. A bit of a mixed bag here and our last panel spoiler shows that Cobalt Kryptonite causes gigantism in the big guy (no pun intended). I’m all for creating new versions of Kryptonite but with over 80 years of established continuity why you gotta mess with it? 7 out of 10 Grahams.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0DC FINEST BLUE BEETLE CHALLENGES THE RED KNIGHT TPB<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Our next subject class deals with Charlton Comics and how they ended up in the DC stable. Charlton Comics started out as T.W.O. Charles Publishing in 1935. Using a second hand printing press that had been previously used to print cereal boxes. Their press were so large and unruly that shutting them down only happened twice a year for cleaning. Since the press were always on, So when the company changed names to Charlton in 1946, they decided to start publishing comics since the presses were on anyway. And whether they knew it or not, they did manage to hire some real talent including Sam Glanzman, Dick Giordano, Joe Gill and Steve Ditko. When the comics industry started to slump, Charltoin made do with western comics and a line of romance comics they had acquired from Fawcett Comics. Doing everything in-house until the company was devastated by a flood in 1955. Rebounding from the disaster, Charlton suddenly found a new audience for super-hero stories. And some old favorites returned in new identities and costumes. The Blue Beetle was one of those characters. The rather bland Dan Garrett with his mystic Blue Beetle amulet turned into the fun loving science hero Ted Cord and his version of the Blue Beetle. And this volume highlights both heroes. And while the Dan Garrett Blue Beetle does indeed challenges the Red Knight, he does some much more. And after battling such villains as Magno, Mentor, the Scorpion, Mr. Thunderbolt, and the Praying Mantis Man, we turn a page and suddenly Ted Cord and his bug-shaped air ship is soaring through the skies. And although characters such as Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, The Question, JudoMaster, and Son of Vulcan were picking up readers left and right, and sales were all right through the early 60s. By the end of 1967, the super-hero line of comics had all been cancelled. But not before bringing another group of talent into the world of comics. Folks such as Jim Aparo, Denny O’Neil, and Sam Grainger.\u00a0\u00a0 By 1983, Charlton was out of business\u00a0 but Charlton’s Action Heroes were aquired by Paul Levitz at DC Comics as a gift for former Charlton editor and then current DC managing editor Dick Giordano. The heroes would re-return in the classic Crisis on Infinite Earths mini-series. What this volume shows us is a struggling comic company with a struggling line of heroes in a completely different era. A real time capsule. 8 out of 10 Grahams.<\/p>\n
