This week, I want to talk about what I believe to be the most \u201cslept-on\u201d series here at the Loop. I get that a lot of books come out and it can be a real challenge to parse through all the muck to find the real gems hidden on the racks. Some books shine brighter than the rest, generating enough praise and hype in order for them to stand out and gain real traction. The cream doesn\u2019t always rise to the top however, and good books go to waste in dollar bins while slop sells for ever increasing cover prices. I\u2019m writing to you all today in an effort, perhaps a futile one, to spare one of the best titles of the last year from obscurity.<\/p>\n

The title I am referring to is Into the Unbeing<\/em>.<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Written by Zac Thompson, illustrated by Hayden Sherman, and published by Dark Horse, Into the Unbeing <\/em><\/a>features a group of climate scientists working in the Australian outback who come across an anomalous landmass in the form of a mountain sided head poking up out of the desert ground. When the crew ventures inside the gaping mouth of the anomaly, they descend into a bizarre and alien biome, rife with disturbing flora and fauna that test their survival skills and call into question their understanding of reality itself.<\/p>\n

Writer Zac Thompson has been working in the industry for a few years now with a handful of creator-owned and work-for-hire gigs under his belt. Some of his credits include Batman: The Brave and the Bold<\/em><\/a>, the Alien: Romulus<\/em><\/a> prequel title, and indie titles such as The Dregs<\/em><\/a> and Cemetery Kids Don\u2019t Die<\/a>. <\/em>His writing here showcases his horror influences from Cronenbergian body horror to lovecraftian cosmic dread. Like the unfortunate scientists, you\u2019ll find yourself ever-discomforted and disturbed as the team travels through the titanic anatomy of the \u201cUnbeing\u201d. The horror is far from vapid, as Thompson injects the story with stakes that feel gravely personal and close to home. Thompson harkens upon the impending climate crisis in both direct and nuanced ways, examining how our changing environment impacts our concern for our loved ones and how an ever-increasing pessimism affects our faith. The narrative plays a game of tug-of-war between hope and nihilism that anyone who is tuned in to the happenings of the modern world will find relatable. If you\u2019re anything like me: a lover of cosmic horror and personal tales with existential questions, you\u2019ll be looking out for Thompson\u2019s back catalog, as well as anything he\u2019ll put out in the future.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the bigger name here is Hayden Sherman, acclaimed for his stellar work on Absolute Wonder Woman<\/em><\/a> and Batman Dark Patterns<\/em><\/a>. Unfortunately, his work at DC has completely eclipsed the work he is doing here. If you love his unique page layouts and creature designs in Absolute Wonder Woman, you will be blown away by what he\u2019s done here. All of the things that make him special are on full display, and his DC work looks like kid stuff by comparison. When reading, you\u2019ll find that every page offers something new, and you get the sense that Sherman is constantly pushing himself to present the narrative in fresh and creative ways.<\/p>\n

\"\" \"\"I hesitate to show you more for fear of spoiling some breathtaking pages. Sherman is doing career work here and showcasing himself as student and innovator of the comics form.<\/p>\n

Beyond his layouts, Sherman brings the Unbeing\u2019s alien ecosystem to life in impressive fashion. The creature designs are strange and grotesque, and sometimes disturbingly majestic, and the environment maintains a massive sense of scale while never letting you forget that you are inside the body of a gargantuan humanoid life form. The characters travel through arteries and organs, rock climb on vertebrae, and swim through stomach acid. It is a joy to discover the innards of the Unbeing alongside the team of scientists, and in no small part due to Sherman\u2019s imaginative design work.<\/p>\n

Despite career defining stuff from two industry up-and-comers, I hardly see anyone talking about this series. The title has minimal coverage on ComicBookRoundUp, and in my neck of the woods, I have seen it on only a single pull list aside from my own.<\/p>\n

The series released in two parts with four issues each. The first trade paperback is available now and the second will be releasing at the end of June. Be sure to ask your comic shop to get you a copy, I promise you will not regret it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
