\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tom King and Peter Gross teamed up last year to give us a break from reality, a light look into animal flights of fancy.\u00a0 They came up with a wacky group of dogs, cats, and rabbits to pal around with in \u2018Animal Pound\u2019.\u00a0 For our pernicious pups, we have Lucky (remember Lucky!), Titan (a good boy), and Piggy (he says crazy things, and people just can\u2019t wait to see what he\u2019ll do next!).\u00a0 Our cats are Madame Fifi (she even SOUNDS stuck up, right?), Mitten the Kitten (are you kidding me with that name?), and Raven (the oldest, but SO snotty.\u00a0 She thinks that just because she\u2019s been around the longest, she knows things because of \u2018history\u2019 and \u2018experience\u2019 and \u2018being right\u2019.) My word, what a bunch.<\/p>\n

\nLucky, Titan, and Piggy
\n\"\" \"\" \"\"
\nMadame Fifi, Raven, Mitten the Kitten<\/em><\/p>\n

So our lil\u2019 scrappers are all in a pound (Hey! That word is in the title!) They\u2019re under the watchful eyes of the pound masters, some humans who bring them food.\u00a0 Now Madame Fifi, that stuck up cat I mentioned earlier, breaks all KINDS of rules and talks with a dog.\u00a0 What in the world?!? That dog is Lucky, but not really, because the day after they talk, the pound masters send him to a farm far far away.\u00a0 This has a bunch of the other dogs sad because they might have to go to the farm too.\u00a0 Woof, amiright?<\/p>\n

The thought of that gets another dog, Titan, to talk to that CRAZZZZZZY cat Madame Fifi.\u00a0 Against all odds, they come up with a plan to, get this, GET RID OF THE POUND MASTERS.\u00a0 Now, you\u2019ve gotta give King and Gross credit here.\u00a0 An Animal Pound?\u00a0 With no people?\u00a0 That\u2019s crazy!\u00a0 That couldn\u2019t happen you guys. That\u2019s how you know you\u2019re in for fun fun fun! And you are, because when they succeed, the fun REALLY starts. See, the animals now have something called \u2018freedom\u2019.\u00a0 They are beholden only to each other for their success and survival.<\/p>\n

\"\"
\nNot doing what you say you\u2019ll do, always a way to win friends!<\/em><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a true dilly of a pickle, but after more talking (always talking talking talking with these two) Titan and Madame Fifi decide that they\u2019re going to work to provide a safe environment for all the animals. That means food and protection, even for the rabbits, the lowly, lowly rabbits.\u00a0 So, THEIR version of freedom requires that the animals recognize that they don\u2019t want to merely survive, they want to thrive.\u00a0 To do that they need to acknowledge that ALL OF THEM (whatever) have common goals.\u00a0 Sure, they\u2019re starting with good intentions, but they can\u2019t always see what\u2019s ACTUALLY happening.\u00a0 So they\u2019re going to hold elections!\u00a0 Animal elections, can you believe it??<\/p>\n

\"\"
\nthis seems like a lot of work, doesn\u2019t it?<\/em><\/p>\n

Now, elections are a whole lot of work, and you can\u2019t just go around thinking what you\u2019re doing is what everyone wants.\u00a0 First, you\u2019ve got all the old animals, like Raven who have their own thoughts on how they spend the rest of their lives. Should we really listen to them?\u00a0 Then you\u2019ve got the young animals.\u00a0 They don\u2019t have the experience or knowledge to actually vote right?\u00a0 What do they know?\u00a0\u00a0 And the cats, and the rabbits\u2026there\u2019s just SOO MANY OF THEM.\u00a0 Too many.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to get an equal vote?\u00a0 Wow, this IS crazy.\u00a0 I mean, they\u2019d have to agree to be considered \u2018less than\u2019 for the big strong dogs to agree to let them vote.<\/p>\n

And they do!\u00a0 Their votes will count based on weight!\u00a0 All solved.\u00a0 Cats and rabbits weigh a lot less than dogs, like 3\/5ths the weight.<\/p>\n

Titan, the saved, Titan, the leader, wins a series of elections, but feels weighed down by a combination of the success and responsibility. He fears both.\u00a0 He fears the control he could have. Crazy dog!\u00a0 He thinks that they don\u2019t need a king.\u00a0 They need a succession of successful animals, each putting their differences aside for the good of all everyone.\u00a0 Titan IS crazy, right???<\/p>\n

The elections continue for a time.\u00a0 There\u2019s a rotation of leaders. Some dogs.\u00a0 Some cats. The occasional odd rabbit. A rabbit president? What dog could stand for that? Maybe they all could.\u00a0 After all, the pound was now flush with food.\u00a0 You see, the old pound masters had something called a \u2018kitten cam\u2019.\u00a0 If the kittens walked in front of it, people sent them money, and it was still set up!\u00a0 Food would be brought to the shelter.\u00a0 The humans who brought it were paid.\u00a0 This is because capitalism is infallible.\u00a0 Yes, a parade of kittens, and even an occasional dog or two, like say, Piggy.<\/p>\n

\"\"
\n<\/em>\u201cLook, its me, my favorite thing!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Now, there are some that would say that Piggy is a vain thing.\u00a0 A gross thing. A selfish thing. That can\u2019t matter though, right? So entertaining!\u00a0 And not even interested in running for office\u2026at the beginning.\u00a0 But what if he did run, huh? \u00a0\u00a0I mean, one wholly unqualified candidate can\u2019t bring down a system that\u2019s worked before.\u00a0 The pound is sound no matter what, that\u2019s what I always say. Silly Piggy in his silly hats! And who would try to change elections?\u00a0 It would be cats and rabbits, that\u2019s who.\u00a0 Starting with Raven.<\/p>\n

Raven, the oldest, declares himself to be opinionated, not wise.\u00a0 Age does not equal wisdom, you see, but Raven is confident that Madame Fifi must declare one vote per animal, not voting by weight.\u00a0 Weight is a false metric.\u00a0 It assigns equal power to minority rule, a few here, a few there, weighted as equals against significantly larger numbers, might use that with ill intent, should someone provide the opportunity. Fifi rejects this opinion, rejects this advice, because she has \u2018hope\u2019.\u00a0 Hope, you see, will save them.\u00a0 Hope will keep them equal.\u00a0 Hope will prevail. (Raven = cukoo in brain talk, btw)<\/p>\n

With that hope, Fifi stepped down, and a new dog was elected. The rabbits joined with the dogs in voting for their candidate, Rascal. The dogs, whose lives had been infinitely better, first under Titan, second under Fifi, felt that any policy changes that hadn\u2019t been specifically beneficial to dogs maybe weren\u2019t fair. Perhaps they\u2019d been slighted (duh!).\u00a0 After all, the giant improvements seen under Titan were not matched with equal scope under Fifi.\u00a0 Therefore, they would vote \u2018dog\u2019, and these wrongs, perceived as they were, would be righted.\u00a0 A new glorious age for dogs would begin, with heavy efforts to improve only their own lives, even if at some minor expense to the whole, and major expense to the other animals.<\/p>\n

Trouble followed- UH OH! \u00a0Thru a succession of both dogs and cats, it could be viewed that not everyone was equal to the job at hand. Apparently, a finite number of animals can only produce a finite number of candidates. Leaders, true leaders, were a rare breed, maybe even less likely to have been in the pound in the first place.<\/p>\n

A death, an attack, and the pound, while still whole, was a divided whole again. The cats, you see, had mocked a small group of dogs for being afraid of the weather even after \u2018weather\u2019 had been explained to them. They were scared of the storm, scared of what they knew to be harmless to them, and this was endlessly funny to a small group of cats. The dogs held that humiliation in their heads like a bone in their mouths. Can you imagine the suffering those poor dogs had to go through just because they chose not to use the information available to them?\u00a0 How is that their fault?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Endorsements were added in the next election. Popular entertainer Piggy of Kitten Cam fame thought his influence was bottomless, universal, and beyond reproach.\u00a0 Imagine the surprise he had when a cat was elected over his chosen candidate, to two terms no less.\u00a0 A mostly black cat, whose origin was to some, undetermined.\u00a0 Was the cat actually black?\u00a0 Is he even from the pound?? Should that disqualify him from even being a candidate?\u00a0 These are both very reasonable questions.\u00a0 They might still be asking them at the pound today!<\/p>\n

And Piggy was just the dog to ask them. See, Piggy knew that the elections had been set up to be unfair to him. It must have been the case if he wasn\u2019t the focus, if he wasn\u2019t winning.\u00a0 Sure, not everything that is good for one dog is good for everyone.\u00a0 And sure, the majority had voted.\u00a0 And yes, they had all agreed on common goals for the pound that would benefit ALL of them, even if Piggy didn\u2019t get the most benefit.\u00a0 The most votes.\u00a0 The most attention.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Now, Piggy had been in the pound the whole time. He was loud, lazy, and oh so dumb.\u00a0 Those last two were selling points to his followers, and he yelled his way right into office.\u00a0 Piggy said things that every dog and cat and rabbit in the pound knew weren\u2019t true, but he said them so often, and with such conviction that it didn\u2019t matter, so that\u2019s like they ARE true, right?\u00a0 So, it didn\u2019t matter that he had not helped the good dog Titan when it came time to simply howl.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter that he cowered in his cage.\u00a0 All he had to do was say he was there.\u00a0 He knew his part. He knew what happened.\u00a0 After all, if he\u2019s the one saying what happened and has the power to stop anyone from saying differently, who could argue?<\/p>\n

\nLying isn\u2019t lying if you say you aren\u2019t lying.<\/em><\/p>\n

Did it matter when Piggy decided that the rabbits were food?\u00a0 Did it matter when he locked the cats away in cages?\u00a0 It did not!\u00a0 Because they are so smart, most dogs cheered as these things happened!\u00a0 There were even some super-duper smart cats and rabbits who voted to keep Piggy in office. Can you imagine \u2018those animals\u2019 being smart enough to make things better for Piggy??\u00a0 Now, not all of them.\u00a0 Not even most, as you can imagine.\u00a0 This is where King and Gross really go off the rails, because they allow Piggy to cancel any further elections after just the slightest bit of unrest.\u00a0 It could never happen, I tell you! But in this wholly fictional story, Piggy\u2019s final election was the pound\u2019s final election too.<\/p>\n

\nLooks like meats back on the menu, boys!<\/em><\/p>\n

In the end, Piggy knew that the pound was a bad idea. Freedom was a bad idea. The other animals couldn\u2019t be trusted.\u00a0 The money that came in from the Kitten Cam appearance was all he cared about, because the money could be used by him to make sure his enemies couldn\u2019t hurt him.\u00a0 He brought in his own humans, who answered only to money (kitten cam money!)\u00a0 For money, all his enemies would put back in their cages.\u00a0 For money, he had his own dogs put in kennels.\u00a0 He just couldn\u2019t have one of them even suggest that maybe there SHOULD be another election, maybe someone else SHOULD be in charge.\u00a0 It\u2019s smart to worry that everyone is a threat, and Piggy certainly thought of himself as smart.\u00a0 He’d say as much, unprompted.<\/p>\n

\"\"
\nSlogans are fun!<\/em><\/p>\n

And with that, King and Gross leave us with Piggy apparently in charge, because of money.\u00a0 Sure, he was in the position of leadership, but could it really be that there were people, humans, in charge of him?\u00a0 That the money, the humans WITH the money, were the ones that actually had the power?\u00a0 And that as long as Piggy put on a show to distract people, they\u2019d be able to gain unprecedented levels of power and control over the entire pound? Just a crazy fantasy land.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Oh, they also had good boy Titan and Madame Fifi put to sleep.<\/p>\n
