Today I ask you, yes you comic reader, a question that has fascinated me since last November!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Is there such a thing as a hit or miss Comic Book artist?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I think we can all agree that there are hit or miss writers all over the industry. Jason Aaron, Mark Waid, and Al Ewing immediately spring to mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Jason, for example, wrote 7 years of unforgettable <a href=\"https:\/\/grahamcrackers.com\/search?s=Thor+God+of+Thunder&amp;w=1\">Thor comics<\/a>. And then followed that up with a less than stellar<a href=\"https:\/\/grahamcrackers.com\/search?s=Avengers+%25(2018)&amp;w=1\"> Avengers<\/a> (hey look it\u2019s Blade before Blood Hunt) run, that I gave up trying even with fantastic Ed McGuiness artwork.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6268 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/889663-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/889663-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/889663.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6267 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1210179-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1210179-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1210179.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Mark Waid has too many titles of greatness to even mention but the <a href=\"https:\/\/grahamcrackers.com\/search?s=Absolute+Power&amp;w=1\">Absolute Power<\/a> was a chore to read even drawn by the generational talent of Dan Mora. Like I skipped issue #3 entirely and only skimmed #4 too see if I needed to know anything for the DC ALL IN one-shot or the Absolute line spinning out of it. Guess what, the answer was 100000% no sir.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6271 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20655-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20655-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/20655.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6270\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1716337-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1716337-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1716337.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Al Ewing wrote, in my mind, the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> greatest Hulk run of all time with <a href=\"https:\/\/grahamcrackers.com\/search?s=Immortal+Hulk+%23\">Immortal Hulk<\/a>, which I almost missed because of his <a href=\"https:\/\/grahamcrackers.com\/search?s=Captain+America+and+Mighty+Avengers&amp;w=1\">Captain America And The Mighty Avengers #3<\/a>, which is in the Top 5 of worst comic books I have ever read.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6273\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1295310-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1295310-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1295310.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6272\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/987629-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/987629-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/987629.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So clearly, to me, there are hit and miss writers. But what about artists?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I can\u2019t think of a similar situation in my 40 plus years of reading. I can think of plenty of artists that went past their primes, or eventually turn into great masters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">For instance, no one, in the 90s could tell me that Rob Liefeld clone Dan Panosian could ever have produced this killer Dr Doom cover, yet here it is.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6275\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/252270-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/252270-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/252270.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6274\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1726977-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1726977-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1726977.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Likewise, no can tell me that Neal Adams or Jim Lee or even my hero Walter Simonson have not lost a step over the years. I mean just look at this cover. Good luck telling me this guy would have a decades long career if his early stuff looked like this. And yet, we all enjoyed the journey Adams took to get there.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6276\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.grahamcrackers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1063691-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1063691-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/1063691.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And here we are. In all the writers\u2019 cases, the misses follow directly after or before greatness. I added Avengers to my pull list because Jason Aaron\u2019s Thor was soooo great no matter the quality of the artist.
