As we approach Valentine\u2019s Day, it is important to remember to immerse those we love in what they crave most- challenging works of art that test the existence of the relationship! Whether it\u2019s taking your second girlfriend to the February 14th<\/sup> opening of (eventual Best Picture winner) The Silence Of The Lambs<\/em><\/strong>, or serenading that special someone with the sweet sounds of \u2018Jordan, Minnesota\u2019 by Big Black, I think we can all agree that romance is something best tested by pervasive, concussive exposure to serious art.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0 \u201cI love your glass, baby!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keeping that sentiment in mind, here are five graphic novel recommendations that might just put the \u2018love\u2019 back in \u201cI\u2019d love to never see you again. Why would you show me this?\u201d If you find that special someone who loves these books as much as you will, you\u2019ll know you\u2019ve got a keeper!<\/p>\n

  1. We can all agree that we love animals, right? The companionship a good dog or cat can provide can bring comfort, security, even delight in the harshest of times. A lot of people will even say they\u2019d pick animals over people any day of the week. If you\u2019ve got THAT<\/strong> animal lover in your life, put that theory to the test and give them a copy of the 2021 classic \u2018Stray Dogs\u2019<\/em><\/strong> by Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner.\u00a0\u00a0 Now sure, there might be concerns, issues, a drag-out fight when Sally Sweetie or Tommy Terrific finds out that these pups are being rescued from the site of their owners\u2019 murders by the murderer himself. I get that.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \"\" <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \u201c\u2026but their owners aren\u2019t as lucky.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

    They also may feel well and truly tricked since the art is clean cel animation style work that will not leave them prepared in the slightest for what they\u2019re going to read, but trust me, if this book was drawn with any degree of visual realism, we\u2019d all be on the floor crying from page 12 on, and nobody wants that.<\/p>\n

    \"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. What\u2019s cuter than animals? Babies! Maybe you\u2019re so far along in a wonderful relationship that you might be thinking of bringing new life into the world.\u00a0 If so, a great primer on child rearing can be found in \u201cDid You Hear What Eddie Gein Done?\u201d<\/em><\/strong> by Eric Powell and Harold Schechter.\u00a0 Finding the right person to raise a family with is important, and you\u2019ll want someone with the warm heart and open arms of an Augusta Gein to be by your side, I\u2019ll tell you what. Following her careful rearing technique will help bring along a bundle of joy that someone just might base the next The Texas Chainsaw Massacre<\/em> on.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \"\" (\u201cactual inspiration\u201d) <\/strong>Perfect for your fella that you want to scare into celibacy, or your lady that you just want to act more like \u2018mother\u2019.\u00a0 Read it as a couple and be ready to have that apartment finder app ready to go when you finish.<\/p>\n

      1. Speaking of children\u2026you know who loves them? That\u2019s right, child murderers! Garth Ennis and Goran Sudzuka have an excellent one in the antagonist in their 2019 horror show \u2018A Walk Through Hell\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Paul Carnahan\u2019s actions are enough to make a good cop go bad, well, several cops, go awfully bad. \"\" <\/strong>(\u201cLike this, but less bad.\u201d) <\/strong>This morality play is the sort of thing that can bring you down for weeks after you\u2019ve read it, in bed, fetal position, and that caring Karen or giving Gary left to watch the joy drain out of your relationship.\u00a0 The easiest way around that is to enjoy the entry of the devil into man\u2019s domain TOGETHER.\u00a0 Whatever theological punches Ennis left unthrown in Preacher <\/em><\/strong>are addressed here in far less uplifting ways.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        1. Religion of a sort is center stage in our next collection,\u2019 Providence.\u2019 Alan Moore uses all his wits to collect things Lovecraft wrote about and fold them into something resembling a less attractive omelet.\u00a0 To say this is an \u201cEverything You Know Is Wrong!\u201d story might be just a bit limited as the fabrics of reality are torn and rewoven into something unwilling to keep mankind as a leading participant.\u00a0 Sure to drive a divisive wedge between you and the Amy Grant\/Stryper fan in your life. \"\"(\u201cPack it up, you southie trash!\u201d)<\/strong> Don\u2019t forget to have the argument where one of you believes that Alan Moore can do no wrong, and one of you believes there\u2019s a massive hypocritical element to his use of other writers\u2019 ideas and characters while he moans on about people using his in real time.\u00a0 Why have one fight when there\u2019s at least two easily at hand?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \"\"<\/p>\n

          1. Lastly, we have a true love story-the story of the love between Brian Michael Bendis\u2026and a serial killer from Cleveland. \u2018Torso<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 is the very true story of the final case of Elliot Ness.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know who Elliot Ness is? That alone should be enough to get the verbal venom going with your soon to be untouchable.\u00a0 Elliot Ness is the man who brought down Al Capone.\u00a0 After that case, he lived the unremarkable life of a g-man before settling in as the safety director of Cleveland. His timing couldn\u2019t have been worse as he moved into the position just as America\u2019s first serial killer was being discovered.\u00a0 I bet you can\u2019t guess where.\u00a0 With all the wonder of a child, Ness and his team of local law enforcement found torso after torso after torso. \"\" (\u201cElliot Ness, shown here with Rachel Dratch\u201d)\u00a0 <\/strong>You see, the killer took the heads.\u00a0 Took the hands.\u00a0\u00a0 Took more, sometimes.\u00a0 What they were reliable for was leaving a torso.\u00a0 Bendis worked on this story for years with Marc Andreyko, and you\u2019ll see many Bendisisms working their way out here.\u00a0 Does your shimmering Sharon hate talking heads?\u00a0 She\u2019ll be riled beyond repair.\u00a0 Does your chattering Chadworth simply despise open ended stories?\u00a0 He\u2019ll be beside himself with the soft resolution here. \u00a0\u00a0Should either one of you feel that a little cartoonist should even be allowed to attempt a Cedar Point version of From Hell<\/em>, I simply can\u2019t imagine I\u2019d like to be in that car driving back from dinner.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            \"\" \u201cMaybe the problem is you\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

            So that\u2019s that.\u00a0 That\u2019s your Joy Division slate for 2022.\u00a0 Your chewing with your mouth open, in comic form.\u00a0 Take a moment, pull your loved one close, and tell them \u201cHey babe.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to make it weird\u2026for YOU.\u201d\u00a0 They should love that, and they\u2019ll certainly love you for it, even as the police help you pack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
