We did get some new comics, but often raided the corner stores that had comics for a nickel. I got Flash #11 and #112 there, as well as Strange Tales with Fin Fan <\/span><span id=\"E49\">Foom<\/span><span id=\"E51\"> and Amazing Adventures with Robot X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E53\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span id=\"E54\">But in early Silver Age issue numbers were meaningless, with very little continuity between issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E56\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span id=\"E57\">All that changed when I bought Amazing Spider-Man #7 at a drug store. Not that issue itself. I was knocked out by the character and dialogue, and while they did mention the Vultures first appearance in ASM #2, it wasn\u2019t such that I felt a new to look for it. But the issue set up Peter Parker\u2019s world, including <\/span><span id=\"E58\">J Jonah Jameson and Peter\u2019s <\/span><span id=\"E59\">rivalry with Flash Thompson.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2961 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/earl1-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/earl1-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.grahamcrackers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/earl1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E61\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span id=\"E62\">The next issue I bought was ASM #9 (first Electro). But the stunner was when Flash mentioned the fight he and Parker had in issue #8! <\/span><span id=\"E64\">First<\/span><span id=\"E66\"> I went through all my stacks of comics hoping I had somehow bought the issue and never read it. <\/span><span id=\"E67\">Ridiculous, but<\/span><span id=\"E68\">, a kid\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E70\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span id=\"E71\">At a friends house I found he has Amazing Spider-man #5 and #10, as well as Tales of Suspense #48 and #49. I had to have them, and offered him fifty cents for the four. I think his mother called my mother to make sure her son wasn\u2019t taking advantage <\/span><span id=\"E72\">of me<\/span><span id=\"E73\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E75\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span id=\"E76\">I got them home ad pored over them. ASM #10 especially, with the ground-breaking three panels <\/span><span id=\"E77\">(even<\/span><span id=\"E78\"> promoted on the cover) explaining why J Jonah Jameson really hate Spider-Man. Believe me, there was nothing like that in DC comics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E80\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span id=\"E81\">I finally got #8 (and #6) at a grocery store which had five cent comics in a rack on the wall. Glorious day Wish I had days like that now. Go buy the new MMW of ASM and see the fight that was but wasn\u2019t, but it was totally satisfying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E83\" class=\"x-scope qowt-word-para-0\"><span id=\"E84\">I missed #11. With the numbers of that issue that turned up in 2 for fifteen packs I think the distributors just didn\u2019t get it out. I got #14 before I got #13, both at regular drug stores. But by this <\/span><span id=\"E86\">time<\/span><span id=\"E88\"> I was checking <\/span><span id=\"E89\">multiple <\/span><span id=\"E90\">stores<\/span><span id=\"E91\"> so I wouldn\u2019t miss any issues. I started grabbing used back issues of the Marvel books, for a nickel, and then seven cents (INFLATION)! Back then there were precious few reprints, and the only way to read the books was to get the originals. Thankfully my parents accepted my collecting and I was able to hold on, until I was out of work and my family need money. I figured I\u2019d buy them back later.
