Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #1

Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #1

$3.50
VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
Written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, art and cover by Daniel Acuña.
This ain't your father's Freedom Fighters! Meet the all-new Phantom Lady, Doll Man, Human Bomb and the Ray -- members of the government task force known as SHADE -- in a new 8-issue miniseries based on concepts by Grant Morrison. These Freedom Fighters are the country's first line of defense against super-powered threats and terrorists. But when the government has become corrupt, how far will they have to go to protect the country? And what of Uncle Sam? Has the embodiment of the spirit of America really been forced underground?
Available:
July 19th 2006
BONUS REVIEW by W. DAL BUSH
Uncle Sam & the Freedom Fighters #1 Huh. Wow. This is really, really good. I totally wasn't expecting that. When I'd heard this new mini-series was being written by Palmiotti and Gray, all I could think of was their awful recent DC work: Battle for Bludhaven, Hawkman, Monolith. Terrible stuff. But this one's got a secret weapon: "Based on ideas and concepts developed by GRANT MORRISON". And that looks like all it takes to make a comic good these days. Much like last week's All-New Atom, this turns out way better than expected as the writers feel like they're channeling pure Morrison brainwaves to get a truly compelling, relevant take on the Freedom Fighters. And Daniel Acuna's first DC interior work is the icing on a cake of comic goodness. Really top notch.
I give it 8 Grahams out of 10.
