Garth Ennis Battlefields Night Witches #3 (2008)

$3.50
VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
Garth Ennis (W) Russ Braun (A) Covers: John Cassday
Anna finds both love and tragedy, as the savage Russian winter tightens its grip on friend and foe alike. Third Squad fight battles below zero, while Kurt is unable to ignore the horror of his comrades' actions any longer. Germans and Night Witches come face to face in the worst possible way, colliding in a final storm of blood and bullets that leaves even the survivors scarred forever - as the first story in the Battlefields series reaches its horrifying conclusion.
Date Available: 01/21/2009
BONUS REVIEW by GARY OWENS

In a tale of WWII, with the Germans and Russians butchering each other around Stalingrad, the Russians take the unusual move (at that time) to bring arms, recruiting women to fly bombing raids at night. Hence the title. Not a big fan of war comics, but this one got to me. It’s rare when I read a three-parter with no extra panels, dialogue that hits jackpot, with a realistic, gutty story. If anything, Garth Ennis scripts a story that could have lasted longer because of it’s power. He grasps the desperation, the despair, the ultimate, bloody undoing of soldiers lifes in WWII; he shows us what a battlefield means, as some search for moral purity, some seek a claiming victory, and many seek simple, but savage vengeance (this is a Mature comic). The ending shocks, but works, reminding us about a war that perhaps was more insane on the Eastern than the Western Front. Every gritty, disturbing detail works here, and I can’t wait for the next installment.
I give it 10 out of 10 Grahams
