graham-tag-o-nism / gram-TAG-uh-niz-uhm

1. an active hostility or opposition, in regards to comic book reviews, between unfriendly or conflicting employees of Graham Crackers Comics.

2. a relationship between two species of simultaneous reviews in which the individuals of each opinion adversely affect the other, as in competition.

3. a weekly on-line comic book review column by
W. DAL BUSH and PATRICK BROWER in which their opinions take precedence over yours.

W. DAL: Hey, did you see 30 Rock yet?

PATRICK: No, I plan to watch it Saturday afterno---oh Hell...

W. DAL: It's (and I can't believe I'm actually typing this) funnier than Studio 60. Yes, really! And it's not based on the cuteness of Tina Fey or the lack-of-cuteness of Bradley Whitford! YES, REALLY!
PATRICK: Not the cuteness of Tracy Morgan? Who is she, anyway? Is she hot?

W. DAL: She is, in fact, the third kind of heat. Once you watch the first episode, you will get how funny I am for noting this and KNEEL BEFORE DAL, Son of George! How was Veronica Mars this week? Did you watch it yet?

PATRICK: No, I plan to watch it Saturday afterno---son of a @!&$#!

PATRICK: How was Casanova??

W. DAL: I haven't caught it yet. Maybe Sat-- never mind. Dang. I wanted to hear if Veronica Mars got any better, but you can't help with that either! Lame. So if you haven't been watching TV this week, what have you been doing? Reading comics? Nerd!

PATRICK: I am an Ultimate nerd, as I just read Ultimate Power #1. And contrary to popular belief (and to what I told some guy this morning before I actually read it) I liked it.

PATRICK: Don't get me wrong, I still have a bunch of things to complain about... and I will... but overall I liked it.

W. DAL: Yeah, same here. Bendis is only writing the first third of this series, which means two things: first, he's great at beginnings and lousy at wrap-ups, so this is playing to his strengths. Second, he can't pull a "New Avengers #10" and decide this his story just HAS to have another part because he couldn't write a denouement for his story in less than 40 pages. How else would he be able to have six pages of Jessica Drew and Cap staring at each other? But TOUGH, 'cause the next guy's up writing issue #4!

PATRICK: Yeah, that's probably why things happened in issue #1. Not a lot of things, nothing at all as depicted on the cover to the book, but who really pays attention to comic book covers anymore? Marvel sure doesn't so why should you??

PATRICK: Lookie, it's Spider-Man and Captain America and Iron Man and none of them are in the book. Yet. Hell, the Squadron Supreme was barely in the book, but at least the grand impetus of this team-up is still the... (wait for it)... SERPENT CROWN!

PATRICK: (singing) Mask your nothing...You're proving nothing... Mask your nothing!

W. DAL: SER-PENT CROWN! SER-PENT CROWN! SER-PENT CROWN AT LUNCH! Yay! Still, you've completely overlooked (as usual) the bestest thing in the book. It's the first appearance of Ultimate Wendell Vaughn -- Ultimate QUASAR, baby! Stock up now before the Ultimate Quasar series comes out next summer from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch! You heard it here! Eat it, Rich Johnston!

PATRICK: Oh, I didn't overlook him, I just let you have that one. Yes, I'm that magnanimous. Yer welcome.

W. DAL: If you're through with your fancy eight-dollar words and false modesty, remind me of something: do we both not like Greg Land now? Or is it just me?

PATRICK: No, no, it's both of us. Nightwing/Birds Of Prey Greg Land is dead to us--dead to the world. Scene-capture Greg Land has taken his place and everyone else seems to prefer him. And each individual panel IS pretty to look at, just not in relation to any other panel on the same page. What happened to his storytelling? G-d help me for asking this but why couldn't Bendis lay out the pages on this book like he does for other artists?

W. DAL: Didn't he? That 2-page "Reed smashes the chair" layout could have come from Ultimate Spidey, Daredevil, DEFINITELY Alias, Powers, Jinx, etc...

PATRICK: Oh, that page messed me up because there was a preview in middle of it for a book that came out a month ago. So I didn't realize it was a double page spread until later. Why even DO centerpieces when you're gonna block them with in-house ads?

W. DAL: Yeah, but not to digress or anything, but I have a similar problem with EVERY Bendis 2-page layout. He'll lay it out like a normal 2-page, read-across-in-rows style, but the panel makeup of each row ALWAYS ends a panel at the page gap, so the first time you read it you think it's two separate pages, not one 2-page thing. BENDIS!!!

PATRICK: BUSH! So overall, it's a simple premise that starts decently enough, and has 8 more issue to totally lose my faith in.

W. DAL: Aw, grumpy much? Despite the typical comic first issue rule of "only 25% of characters on first cover may appear in first issue" (see New Avengers, Justice League, Pirates of Coney Island, and many more) I dug this book. Bendis' characterization of Reed in particular and the rest of the cast in general felt yards better than his last stint on Ultimate F.F. and Greg Land... well, what more can we say? Pretty panels that feel frozen and stilted. It's like watching one out of every 7000 frames of a movie.

W. DAL: It may LOOK good, but storytelling usually goes right out the window, you know?

PATRICK: Dal, all I know is you're sickening!! You're a horror!!! You'll die alone!!!
7 Grahams.

W. DAL: True enough, man.
  8 Grahams!

W. DAL: Now go watch some TV, all of you!
