As a huge Daredevil fan, I think it's going to take a while to process Shadowland #1 as a whole. That being said Im fairly certain that the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts. There are definetly things to like about the book, but if you care about the street level characters, things you may not like as well. If you managed to avoid all the spoilers going into this there may be some genuine suprises, but otherwise its pretty standard Daredevil vs. Bullseye fare with some glaring exceptions to the dynamic. The art of the book comes off pretty inconsistent, being pretty great in some spots and mouth contortingly bad in others. Rest assured though, if you appreciate Daredevil looking ninjafied, the artists pretty well nailed that. In fact, if you looked at posters or promo's and said "cool, Daredevil looks pretty hardcore now, I have to see what's that about..." then perhaps this book is for you. The writers clearly wrote it to appeal to a broad audience, which will most likely leave many Daredevil fans somewhat disillusioned. It's the very same thing plaguing modern cinema and making the television drama more appealing than most theatrical releases, in trying to appeal to everyone, you end up really appealing to no one. Thankfully though, the writers in interviews said that though Shadowland was intentionally told from the view point of the other characters, you can still pick up the Daredevil series to find out what's going on in Matt's head - and I would highly recommend that. To not do so would be tantamount to only picking up Cap's side of "Civil War". In conclusion, with much to criticize I have faith in the writers on this project and I believe that this will end being a great story when all is said and done.
I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams
