(W) Brian Azzarello
(A/CA) Eduardo Risso
Set during Prohibition, and deep in the backwoods of Appalachia, MOONSHINE #1 tells the story of Lou Pirlo, a city-slick 'torpedo' sent from New York City to negotiate a deal with the best moonshiner in West Virginia, one Hiram Holt. What Lou doesn't figure on is that Holt is just as cunning and ruthless as any NYC crime boss. Because not only will Holt do anything to protect his illicit booze operation, he'll stop at nothing to protect a much darker family secret...a bloody, supernatural secret that must never see the light of day… or better still, the light of the full moon. MOONSHINE #1 marks the first time AZZARELLO and RISSO have worked together for Image Comics and reunites the Eisner Award winning creative team that defined modern crime comics with 100 Bullets… and now puts a horror-twist on a classic gangster tale. Issue #1 features a variant cover by legendary comics creator, Frank Miller!

BONUS REVIEW by Kevin Healy

The new bootleggin' book from the makers of 100 Bullets? Yeah, I read it. It's real smooth too. That's how Azzarello gets ya. This is the sweet time for a book like dis- the early time. You know what I'm talkin' about. "There's a suitcase and a gun and youse can do whatever youse want with it"-easy. Here ya got mountains and moonshine, with a New York angle-easy. Gets you all hooked, yer drunk on the Risso art, all clean like with its heavy blacks and such. Looks real good out in the woods with them, whatta call its...silhouettes...yea, dem. Sorry to get all fancy like on ya. Sure, yer gonna get all roped in, and then, bam...there's probably werewolves durin prohibition, and Lon Cheney ain't nowheres to be seen. I ain't much fer readin', but if I has to, I sorta like this stuff (before peoples writin' 'Krakatoa' or 'Croatoan' or whatever. Mebbe this one won't get all bogged down. I'd drink to dat.

I give it 7 out of 10 Grahams
