Any time there's a new issue of the Goon, its a cause for celebration. After a hiatus to try and kickstart an animated feature film, Eric Powell is back doing more amazing work on his titular creation. If you haven't read The Goon before, he's a mob enforcer secretly running his own crew who also happens to be the protector of a town overrun by supernatural elements ranging from zombies to Rumpelstiltskin. It all sounds like pretty regular, run of the mill stuff, I know. The Goon is known for its ups and downs. When its up, the laughs pour out in an unstoppable flow. At its best, there's no funnier book on the stands. At its lows, Powell is able to take you in and make you feel badly about every choice you've ever made that hurt someone-truly emotionally wrenching stuff (see the standalone graphic novel Chinatown for the best example). The current story is definitely on the down side, as the supernatural leaders plot the demise or downfall of the Goon and his supporters once and for all. It reads like this might be the endgame for the series, and Powell is good enough to fill in and flesh out some back story for characters who've been around for well over a decade now. Drawn in a variety of art styles, each suited to the emotion or time of the events, the book honors the best that sequential storytelling has to offer.

I give it 8 out of 10 Grahams
