BONUS REVIEW by John "Doc" Schaefer

I keep thinking back to the classic Avengers #83 with the 1st (and only)appearance of Valkyrie and her Lady Liberators and want this book to succeed. And who can resist a paper doll cover! I haven't seen one of those since Sugar and Spike back in the 60's! The plot points are solid, the art is fine for the subject matter, so why can't I fully get behind this book. I have literally collected all books Defenders since the early Marvel Feature Days. I suffered through Defender for a Day, Secret Defenders, The Order, The Last Defenders, so why can't I love this book. It's a terrible thing to say but I think its due to the sometimes overbearing strong women characters. There are at least one or two scenes in every book where the reader has to punched square in the face with the fact that these characters are strong woman and shouldn't be messed with. Like we need to be reminded that a woman covered head to toe in vicious looking armor and carrying a sword longer than her arm should be thought of as dainty. The Marvel Universe has always been full of strong woman characters who not only set good role models but with stood the test of time. (Remember the short lived Age of Marvel Women with titles like Shanna the She-Devil, Night Nurse, and Beware the Cat!) This title has possibilities and potential but I don't need to hit between the eyes with a sledgehammer to get the hint. Turn up the subtlety and hope that the DC lawyers don't hear about Hippolyta!

I give it 6 out of 10 Grahams
