Zeck Morgan was raised by his minister father to be a pious, God-fearing child, devoted to his church. Unfortunately, when the International Fleet decides Zeck is a candidate for training in Battle School, they tear him from his home and prepare him for war. Zeck refuses to participate in the school's war-games due to his pacifist religious beliefs. When he sees another student celebrating Christmas--seemingly violating Battle School's rules against religious practice--he raises an uproar that may tear Battle School apart. Can even Ender Wiggin calm this furor? Find out in this double-sized adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Ender Universe novella, War of Gifts.

BONUS REVIEW by SHANNA BERRY

Introducing a new recruit to Battle School, we quickly learn from Zeck’s home-life that he is gifted with a photographic memory which he must hide from his Pastoral Father, who would condemn the gift as satanic. Against the parent’s protests and Zeck’s own refusal to leave home, he is chosen to aid the international fleet and join Battle School. Zeck’s experience in Battle School is unlike any other recruit we have yet seen. Regardless of the fierce competition, he remains loyal to his beliefs in his protest to violence, rendering himself useless in all battles and training scenarios. It is difficult to not respect the pride he exhibits with his effort to remain moral, and the innocence of the character just reels you in. Though you might be tempted to skip this seemingly unrelated one-shot, this issue brings a few new elements to Ender’s Game that you won’t want to miss.
I give it 7 out of 10 Grahams
