DASTARDLY & MUTTLEY #1     DC COMICS

Well count another one of my childhood favorites totally crushed. After DC’s short lived revamp of the Wacky Races, I had hope for their take on the beloved Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines cartoon. And I couldn’t have been more wrong. While Garth Ennis’s tale is a good one (not a great Garth Ennis tale but a good one), and Mauricet’s artwork is fine especially when enhanced with John Kalisz’s colors but this is not Dastardly and Muttley! The concept of Muttley being a dog human hybrid due to radiation is absolute twaddle and Dick Dastardly is not silly evil enough. Change the name to something else and lose the dog head and you’ll get a 6 or a 7 for another good Garth Ennis war book. Leave it so that it sends me sobbing to the den to re-watch the real Dastardly and Muttley try to stop the pigeon, and you’re lucky to get a 4.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #28     DC COMICS

Long time fans of the Justice League will find no great surprises here. Aside from the cover, I didn’t see Aquaman at all in the book first off. The Justice Leagues’ future kids themselves are admitting that they may have gone back into an alternate past (which doesn’t it mean that your mission is just doomed to failure?) Secrets from the future are revealed and it seems if Hunter may have been a disappointment to his dad in the future. As we build up to the inevitable face off between the future family and their parents, I have yet to see anything that grabs me by the chahoogas. Way to play it safe and boring, DC. I give it a 5 out of 10.

GREEN ARROW #30     DC COMICS

Again, DC wallows in mediocre and tries to put a new spin on an old tale. But the new take waters down the classic moments when the team of Green Lantern and Green Arrow was award winners and even a Mike Grell variant cover can’t save it. Readable but nothing that screams Rebirth! at me.  I give it a 5 out of 10.
