Doc’s Reviews for 5-16-17

Welcome aboard, you special comic readers! We are fully hoping that we’ve worked the bugs out and that I’m actually here. As a special treat, gonna throw a really doozy out at you so you know what you can expect when you check in here at Doc’s Corner. Hi, I’m Doc and this is my corner so pull up a barstool and let me (in the words of Jim Carrey’s Fire Marshall Bill) Let me “show ya a little something!”

One of the best parts of being a comic reviewer is sometime being exposed to a book that you honestly didn’t know existed. And that’s what I discovered this past weekend. Independent comic publisher, American Mythology Productions (the fine folks who bring you the current 3 Stooges comics!) have apparently put this title out with little to no hoopla. But it definitely deserves some coverage.

Starring Sonya Devereaux (Yes, that is the title of the book) is a wonderful little crash up. If you were to take the 1990’s Claypool Comics Elvira, add in some Archie-style humor (just a little more racy), and then overseason it with a 1980’s Zenescope style of art and then puree the heck out of it, this is what you’d get!

Todd Livingstone and Nick Capetanakis’s story is a playful use of the plot devise where an interviewer visits the home of an actress and they sit down to watch her old movies. In this case we are treated to Vampire Academy 4. The movie story is truly believable as an 80’s B-movie classic. Trust me, I spent a good chunk of my younger years going through R&R Video’s entire VHS collection! Sonya’s characterization straddles the line between flirtatious nymphet and out of work address who believe in her work (no matter how crappy it was!) Her dialog about how Vampire Academy 4 brought new life to the franchise is priceless!

Brendan and Brian Fraim’s artwork is spot on for this title. Going from the wraparound plot device where Sonya looks rather frumpy to the movie scenes where she’s rising out of a coffin in a nighty. Meow! And Matt Webb’s color palette range from the dreary browns of Sonya carpet to he bright red schoolgirl outfit. And one of the best parts is that they’ve actually included the interview that was supposedly done by the visiting interviewer. Talk about commitment to the story! Fans of B-movie horror rejoice. My only hope is that this is not just a one-shot.

I’m throwing this one a big
